L-Tyrosine Plus
100 grams

L-phenylalanine is an essential amino acid which can be converted to L-tyrosine by a complex biochemical process which takes place in the liver. L-tyrosine can be converted by neurons in the brain to dopamine and norepinephrine (noradrenaline), hormones which are depleted by stress, overwork and certain drugs. By replenishing norepinephrine in the brain, mental energy levels are enhanced and a feeling of contentment often occurs. Because of the liver conversion necessary for L-phenylalanine to have these effects, L-tyrosine is often faster acting. In addition, the conversion step from L-tyrosine to norepinephrine may be enhanced if the cofactors (vitamins B6 and C) are included.

Cells in the adrenal medulla synthesize and secrete norepinephrine and epinephrine. Since both norepinephrine and epinephrine can cause smooth muscle (arterial) contraction, care with blood pressure should be taken when supplementing L-phenylalanine or L-tyrosine.

L-tyrosine is also a precursor of two thyroid hormones. D-phenylalanine is unique among amino acids because the D-form (normally not found in life) has biological activity that is different from its L-stereoisomer. D, L-phenylalanine is a 50/50 mixture of the two stereoisomers.

SAMe
200 mg 50 Enteric Cated Tablets

SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) is an amino acid derivative normally synthesized in the body. SAMe is used by the body in three important pathways:

Methylation (contributing methyl groups to activate certain molecules)
The synthesis of polyamines (for cell growth, gene expression, neuronal regeneration, etc.) Trans-sulfuration (synthesis of cysteine, glutathione, and other sulfate chemicals)

In young healthy people, SAMe is well distributed throughout the body as a result of its synthesis from methionine by enzymes using ATP. However, in sickness and in age, system levels may become depleted. Supplementation of the co-factors folate, TMG, vitamins B6 and B12, together with SAMe, appears to be an effective method to overcome this problem. There is evidence that SAMe helps to synthesize phosphatidylcholine, which keeps cell membranes fluid and is used in the brain to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

In 2002, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services conducted a meticulous evaluation of SAMe. Their findings show the efficacy of SAMe in helping maintain stable mood and joint function, without any side effects. Since aging people often suffer joint discomfort and immobilization, SAMe addresses multiple problems people face as they grow older.

SAMe has multi-modal mechanisms of action that are used throughout the body, and especially the liver. In order to perform its detoxification role, the liver performs large numbers of complex enzymatic reactions continually.21,23 SAMe facilitates healthy methylation enzymatic processes and boosts hepatic levels of the critical antioxidant, glutathione. When liver function is compromised, glutathione is depleted, which leads to free radical damage. In addition, SAMe acts as a methyl donor in the synthesis and formation of phosphatidylcholine and L-cysteine, both necessary for maintaining liver health. It has been shown that SAMe protects against CYP2E1-induced liver damage and alcohol-induced liver cell apoptosis.

SAMe occurs naturally in the body; it is concentrated in the liver and brain and is a major methyl donor in the synthesis of hormones, nucleic acids, proteins, and phospholipids, catecholamines, and other neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin. SAMe is required for the synthesis of norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin, and also plays a role in other intracellular metabolic pathways. SAMe facilitates glutathione usage and maintains acetylcholine levels, which help enhance or maintain cognitive function, and attenuate or prevent aggression of aging and neurodegeneration.

SAMe levels may become depleted in sickness and in age. Supplementation of the co-factors—folate, trimethylglycine (TMG or betaine), vitamins B6 and B12, together with SAMe—appears to be an effective method to overcome this deficiency. There is evidence that SAMe helps to syn-thesize phosphatidylcholine, which keeps cell membranes fluid and is used in the brain to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
